African Monochrome Vase

This beautifully styled black and white Kenyan piece is one of the few monochrome items Lady Swish allows to stay the way it came to her. As with Lord Kerfuffle’s rainbow vase, it was made by a Kenya community group who teach their members to carve soapstone so that they can support their families. Although they wanted to help the group in some practical way, the best they could do for them was to take their vases home, show their friends and enable them to sell more this way. See Lord Kerfuffle’s vase entry for information on the Border Control Incident.

Specifications

This stunning vase has been dug out of the ground, carved, painted and polished by the Tabaka Chigware Youths Self-Help Group, a community of young artisans, which launched in 1996, with 40 young members aged 18 and over. An even mix of young women and men, their group successfully started improving their families’ and communities’ livelihoods. Through crafting soapstone goods, they have been contributing to improved housing, clean water initiatives, medical facilities, and better education for their children. It has striking geometric design which has been loving carved by hand.
